Monophona - Ribbons / Black on black

Without sounding like too much of a Debbie Downer, it’s sometimes good to embrace melancholy, revel in pity and embrace the darkness to truly see the beauty in other pursuits.

Not that i’m going through a crisis or anything at the moment, but certain tracks just find a way of capturing you in those vulnerable moments, engrossing with gloom, in the exact same way a joyous melody can uplift and change your outlook on life (or the day, at least).

Harnessing sadness in music without sounding contrived is difficult to master though, which is why pessimism is usually reserved to the confines of folk or equally sparse genres.

Monophona however do things differently, finding a way to express dark thoughts as much in their precise instrumentation as in their wordplay, creating a truly affecting brand of broadly influenced electronica.

‘Ribbons / Black on Black’ the first single from the Luxembourg trio’s new record grips you from the offset, polarising a trip-hop beat with haunting vocals and just the right amount of modern wobble to draw you in, atmospheric layers constantly being added and retracted to cultivate an emotive, foreboding ambience that plays to all your darkest thoughts.

Full legth album will be released on Kapitän Platte end of January 2015.
